Title: Confessions of a Muppet freak: A Muppet Fan Podcast

For my sound project i would like to do a podcast where I interview a puppeteer who is part of the Muppet world. I have a few ideas for guests such as Tau Bennett, Noel MacNeal and Matt Vogel. I have made an agreement for Sesame Street performer Tau Bennett to come on and talk to me

I have previously interviewed Noel MacNeal for my own podcast with the same name as I am using for this product. However I am yet to release the podcast because of some issues with the sound. Also i just have not found the time to release it.

My target audience is going to be Muppet fans and avid puppeteers and puppet builders who will want to hear the stories from these people and to hopefully gain advice from them in order to improve their own puppetry skills. I will find this audience through Muppet fan sites such as Tough Pigs and Muppet Central Forum

I will be taking some inspiration from Adam Kreutinger's podcast Puppet Tears in which he interviews puppeteers and puppet builders  such as Bill Barretta, Peter Linz, Jim Kroupa and many many more. He talks to his guests about how they got their start in puppetry, projects they've done and stuff they are doing now.  I am hoping to be able to draw inspiration from Adam in order to draw an audience as well as engage my guests. I will doing some research to find out what people like and dislike about podcasts and I will be asking these Muppet fans what they want to hear in these podcasts in order to make the best.

In terms of my research, I will be looking at three podcasts. Each one will be different and will be covering different things. One will be the hot ones interview with Paul Rudd, A Defunctland podcast with Noel MacNeal and this Bill Barrata interview as shown above

The content I will be including in my podcast includes:

  • A script-
I will not have set script that I will want to stick too, however I will want to have a set of questions and topics I will want to cover with my guest Tau Bennett. I will want to respond to his answers with a suitable question based off the answer that he gave me.So the interview, while i want to have set topics will be unstructured
  • Incidental (sound effects)-  I will want to use sound effects, this could be to segment into the different parts of the interview
  • And music- I will use music as an intro and an outro. It will be related to the topic of the podcast which is Muppet's. So it will probably will be a song from the Muppet film soundtracks. The Outro song i have decided on is The Goodbye song from Bear In The Big Blue House. However I am still undecided on an intro song. I have decided on the Goodbye song as my outro because it is one of best songs from the "Muppet  Universe" and is probably my favourite song from the Muppet universe

I will not be using Foley sound in my project was because I don't feel that it would be necessary in an interview to make sounds for things like water etc that are not part of the interview in any way. The same can be said for ambient sound. Because I will be filming in the studio or in the recording booth, there will not be any background noise so trying to use ambient sound to match a setting of the studio would not work.

This podcast will be seen by people on many different platforms. I will be putting it onto YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Anchor, Anchor and Apple podcasts are sites which you can create and distribute podcasts. These two along with Spotify and YouTube will be a great way to reach an audience

But before I distribute my podcast, I need to make it first...

I will need the skills of good communication and to be able to engage my guest because if my guest is not invested, then I will not been able to get good answers from him, I will also have to be a good listening skills to be able to clearly understand what Tau Bennett was saying and then base my next questions of his answers

Equipment:
Rode NT1-A- Condenser microphone
H4N Pro- sound recorder
Skype, Discord or Anchor - In order to call and speak to my guest, Tau Bennett. more than likely it will be Anchor or Skype as you can't record audio from discord.

Idea:
My idea for my project is a podcast/ interview.

I want to be able to interview a Muppet performer or puppeteer because my interest is in puppetry and i have always enjoyed listening to interviews from puppeteers in the past so i have decided to interview a puppeteer.

I choice of three puppeteers that I wanted to interview. Matt Vogel, Noel MacNeal and Tau Bennett.

Matt Vogel is currently the most in demand puppeteer in the game right now. Since the late 1990's he has been the understudy for Big Bird and since 2018 has been the primary performer for that character. Since the early 2000's he has taken over the late Jerry Nelson's characters doing the puppetry for characters like the count and since 2008 has been the principle performer for Muppet characters that include Floyd Pepper, The count, Camilla, Uncle Deadly, Sweetums, Lew Zealand and  Dr Julius Strangepork. He was Constantine in the 2014 film Muppets Most Wanted. and since July 2017, he was cast as Kermit The Frog replacing Steve Whitmire after he was fired by Disney.  He is currently an executive producer on Sesame Street as well as directing certain specials and episodes, he has many characters that he performs so right now Matt Vogel is at the top of his game. He has done so much in his career that it would make a great podcast and he would have many good stories to ell.
However, Matt being at the top of his game is actually why I cannot have Matt Vogel as my guest. He is so busy right now. He has just started production on season 51 on Sesame Street so he is going to be very busy with the show and his characters Big Bird and the Count. As stated previously he also has the responsibility of being an executive producer so he has that extra job to do which would take up most of his time. Kermit the frog is also a very demanding job as he is required to do a lot of interviews and appearances as Kermit.
All of these factors mean that Matt's time is limited and we may not be able to find time to do the interview. So I decided to not ask Matt Vogel.

The next puppeteer I considered asking was Noel MacNeal. Noel MacNeal has done many roles in television and film, they most famously included the titular role as Bear in the very popular playhouse Disney show Bear In The Big Blue House. He performed Bear for it's entire run from 1997 to 2006 and he has done lots of other work including roles on Oobi, the puzzle place, Eureeka's Castle, the great space coaster and many more. Noel has spoken in many interviews in the past and is known for telling great stories about his past and his time as Bear. However as he has done many interviews and podcasts and he often tells the same stories so I decided to not use Noel as my guest as I do not want certain stories to be repeated from other interviews.

The final puppeteer i considered was Tau Bennett, Tau Bennett is an american puppeteer who currently works on the popular children's show sesame street. most Muppet fans would know him from the 2011 documentary Being Elm. At just 11 years old we saw Tau Bennett being mentored by Kevin Clash at the end of the documentary, we also see Tau Bennett perform at the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade in 2011 where performed Baby Bear along side Veteran performer Marty Robinson. Starting in 2016, Tau has been working on sesame street as one of the Muppet performers and is currently on his 4th season. In his career so far he's had an eventful journey so I wanted to talk with him about it. And since last January i have been speaking to Tau on Instagram
about puppetry and felt comfortable enough to ask him and he agreed.
